MRI: Development of a Real-world Microgrid Simulation/Testing Instrument -Award Abstract #1828443

Microgrids are a powerful means of increasing the use of Renewable-Energy-Sources (RES), an important part of the evolution of both Smart Grids and distribution systems. The proposed microgrid testbed is an experimental and educational platform for companies, communities and research institutions that are developing solutions for the integration of RES and intelligent appliances. The microgrid testbed promotes the progress of science and fosters prosperity and welfare by advancing the integration of RES into the existing electric-grid while increasing the reliability of the grid. It will improve the overall energy efficiency by reducing peak-capacity requirements using developed techniques like demand-side management and new tools such as smart plug-in-vehicles deployment. This contributes to advance the state-of-the-art in microgrid infrastructure research. Results can improve future designs and deployments of microgrids while supporting the NSF-mission to promote the progress of science.

Developing socially and economically generative, resilient PV-energy systems for low- and moderate-income communities: Applications for Puerto Rico

The community of the neighborhood Salud is in the urban area of the town of Mayagüez, as shown in the pic. This community is in the following location:
  • Latitude: 18.21
  • Longitude: -67.14
  • Barrio Salud is a community with low economic resources. The current state of their houses is not the most favorable. One of the main problems in this community is poor electrical power service. A series of images from Barrio Salud, taken from a drone, to identify the current condition of the houses and with the aim of classifying the potentially rooftop for the use of photovoltaic panels, will be presented.

Sandia National Laboratories: This PREB Microgrid Rule set the legal and regulatory framework required to encourage the development of electric microgrid systems in Puerto Rico

On May 16th, 2018 the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) adopted and published the “Regulation on Microgrid Development”, (PREB Microgrid Rule). This PREB Microgrid Rule set the legal and regulatory framework required to encourage the development of electric microgrid systems in Puerto Rico. The PREB Microgrid Rule is a direct result of an investigation regarding the state of Puerto Rico’s electrical system post Hurricane María. In this work, we adapted existing models, or developed new models, for components of
  • Summary of models
  • Summary of Scenarios and Simulations
  • Chapter summarizing the PREB Rule
  • Summary sensitivity analysis 75% minimum renewable energy per year.
  • Summary sensitivity analysis of PREPA ramp rate rule for large PV systems for selected microgrids.
